Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, who has settled in Dubai with her cricketer-husband Shoaib Malik, I is back in the news for wrong reasons.
More than 3,000 poor Muslims descended on Sania’s house at Jubilee Hills early on Monday morning, following rumours that her family members would be distributing Rs 1,000 to each of them as “Zakat” (financial assistance), a tradition followed by rich Muslims during the month of Ramzan.
It was true that Sania’s parents were planning to make zakat to about 400 poor families in the locality but somehow a word spread that the family would be giving away lots of money to the poor. Since 4.30 in the morning, Muslim families started coming to her residence and by afternoon, the number swelled to around 3,000. Initially, the family distributed Rs 300 each to the poor and after seeing people coming in hundreds, they simply shut the doors on their faces. The crowds argued with the security guards and the family members, saying that they had come from different parts of the city by spending Rs 100-Rs 200 on auto rickshaw fare.
The Sania’s family members were frightened to see such a huge crowd and called the police, but even by late afternoon people were reaching the house. The police entered the scene and dispersed the crowds, who cursed Sania and her family.
